Ten Steps to Successful Piano Lessons
Learning a new hobby can be frustrating and exciting at the same time. When you do really well, you are so proud and happy. When you have difficulty, you get angry and sulk, often considering quitting the lessons. Learning the piano is much like this for many folks. But by considering the following ten steps while learning piano, you can be successful.
- Perseverance. If you are the type of person who gives up easily, then you will likely not get anywhere with learning new hobbies. That is why you must commit fully to the lessons and adopt this mantra: “practice the piano perseveringly to progress.” Say it every day, several times.
- Patience. Learning to play the piano is difficult. You have to have patience with yourself – with your brain while it soaks up the music and with your body as you adapt to the posture and fingering. You also have to be patient with your teacher. Until they know how you learn, they may believe that you are ready to move ahead.
- Reasonableness. You will not be playing Beethoven or Chopin in your first lesson. Probably not even in your first year. There is nothing wrong with beginner music and your teacher knows that. You need to accept it as well.
- Dedication. Practice makes perfect and dedication to practice is key when learning piano. Piano practice needs to be a priority and will reflect how well you will progress.
- Humility. Learning the piano is imperfect. Mistakes and nerves are all part of the experience. Humility will help us to accept advice and suggestions and recognize our limitations. This is a key step in learning.
- Enthusiasm. You have to love music and enjoy it in order to play it. You have to have the desire to learn and be positive in order to succeed.
- Inquisitiveness. We need to be inquisitive and ask about things we don’t know. Without it, we limit our knowledge and experiences.
- Endurance. The piano cannot be learned overnight. We must accept the fact that it will probably take several years to become an experienced piano player. So we need to endure hours, days, weeks, months, and years of practice and playing in order to reach that time when we can play confidently.
- Sensitiveness. Music is like art. It is to be appreciated and admired. It can be “felt” and our feelings can be expressed through music. Music is passionate and tender. Those who are in tune with their music can become truly accomplished pianists.
- Creativeness. The piano can often bring out the musical artist within each student. The way a piece of music is played can go beyond what the composer intended when they put the notes on paper. Some pianists can just play and let the music flow from their creativeness.
